School of the Nations

Three schools participated in a Full-Circle Learning training for the School of the Nations, presented by Anisa Qualls in late July, 2006. Approximately 45-50 educators, press and government officials attended the event.

The 400 K-8 students at the diverse host school include the foreign children of diplomats as well as local youth. The sister schools as well as the high school (which serves 200) also attended, so the impact of the training could influence close to 1,000 students.

High school faculty took notes on the philosophy of the program, to adapt it to their current curriculum, while the K-8 School of the Nations led the charge in infusing the content into the Ethics classes at every grade level. Each grade took on one of the lesson plan manual themes in its annual planning for integrating character education and local and global community service into academics and the arts. Every module will be used for one of the grade levels, from preschool through grade 8.

Two newspapers, as well as government officials, interviewed Anisa Qualls, and the sister schools who attended the training wrote press releases of their own about the event. The school's director, Lisa Perskie, praised Anisa for her grace and knowledge in representing the model's philosophy and strategies. She conveyed that the guests were "touched from the bottom of their hearts... Their souls were completely moved."

The school's director, Lisa Perskie, assigned a teacher named Elena as the Full-Circle Learning coordinator. The program is now in action, with each grade level pursuing a different identity and goal, such as Habits of Helpers, Habits of Humanitarians, Habits of Givers, Habits of Heroes, etc. All grade levels use the conflict bridge to resolve conflicts in literature and use the Habitsof- Heart in their lesson planning. Middle school students are especially active in tying in guest presenters and community action. The 7th graders completed their first quarter, with the academic unit themed around "Sacrifice" by creating a book for their global learning partners in the United States and Panama. A guest presenter, a pediatrician, told of sacrifices her mother made while traveling in Turkey. The School of the Nations is quickly becoming a model Full-Circle Learning site.
