Lesotho
Louis Gregory Centre and Moklotlong Schools and NGOs
A new project in the making, spearheaded by
Kal Basin, has begun in the mountainous African
kingdom of Lesotho, in the community called
Mokhotlong. It will prepare children to become
community leaders through integrated education,
to help their families and communities a country
where the average age is 20 and where many
children are orphaned early in life by the spread
of HIV/AIDs.
The educational project at the Louis Gregory
Centre is open to youth from every background.
Eventually, the facilities may house 30 orphans as
a permanent school and orphanage. The program
will include after-school classes and also a focus
on providing teacher training for a segment of the
community's older youth, to influence the culture
of the entire population of local youth and children.
Local capacity building will be the key to
its success.
The program began when Kal Basin bought
a farm to dedicate to the moral and academic
education of area youth. The centre requested
educational resources and project development
consultation from Full-Circle Learning. In Year
One, we are partnering to provide: a) a needs assessments
to evaluate long-term growth potential
for a school and orphanage; b) an ongoing class
conducted by a teacher who befriends families
and conducted capacity-building courses; c) a
skills-building winter camp, to assist more youth
in becoming teachers or mentors of younger
children; d) ongoing mentorship and sustainability
practices through the year, based on the goals
established in the needs-assessment phase.
International Education specialist Allison Lides
and artist/teacher Joni Morales are the first to take
their skills to launch the project, with Anne Serapiglia
and Shohreh Maghzi preparing to contribute
to the project in the winter. Allison's husband
Mostafa will contribute his skills as a physician to
the evaluation of the health needs of the population
served. Kal will remain the stabilizing force
by driving his jeep up to the mountain town
with supplies, human resources and encouragement-
and hopefully, someday soon, a generator of
electricity to match the generator of enthusiasm
he represents to all those involved.
