Alumni Kathy Rosales, a nursing student in California, grew up with Full-Circle Learning programs in her life from elementary school on. After receiving a fellowship from the American Diabetes Foundation, Kathy spent the spring semester of 2018 helping a teacher implement the habit-of-heart “Understanding” at Tarzana Elementary School’s Habits of Heart Club. After expanding their own understanding of how habits affect outcomes, the students held a community health fair to advance the prevention of diabetes among their families and their neighborhood of recent immigrants. They taught adults how to check their Body Mass Index (BMI) and blood pressure and how to understand the relationship between diet, exercise and blood sugar. They created posters to help guests adjust their lifestyles and at home, they held discussions to create greater understanding about how to care for one another’s health and wellbeing.
